Firms Apply to Supply Medical Cannabis to Minnesota Patients

By Rebecca 10/14/2014

The deadline to apply to become one of the two companies to manufacturer medical marijuana in Minnesota was on October 3, 2014. Only one dozen companies applied even though 29 notified the state that they had plans to apply. The companies that applied had to submit an application and a $20,000 non-refundable check to the Minnesota Department of Health.

The steep application fee was put in place by the state in hopes that only serious applicants with the most thorough business plans will apply. It is believed that the $240,000 received in application fees will go to the general fund or be used for the Office of Medical Cannabis expenses.

Despite less than half of the companies following through and applying, the number is a good one. Michael Schommer, a spokesperson for the state’s Office of Medical Cannabis stated, “Twelve is a good number, it will give us the opportunity to vet a number of quality applicants and ultimately we’ll end up with some pretty strong manufacturers.”

Minnesota’s Health Department plans to choose the two manufacturer’s by December 1st. The companies chosen will grow the medical marijuana, process them for sale, and starting in July, they will dispense pills and oil from eight locations around the state. It is believed that there may be up to 5,000 medical marijuana patients, but the exact number is unknown at this time. It is also unknown how much the medication will cost for patients. At this time, the patient possession limits have yet to be determined, but only non-smokable forms of the medications will be allowed.

The qualifying conditions include:

  • Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis

  • Cancer/cachexia

  • Glaucoma

  • Seizures

  • Severe and persistent muscle spasms

  • Terminal illness

  • Tourette’s syndrome

The identities of the 12 applicants will not be revealed until the final decision has been made. Several companies have already stepped forward and expressed their interest in growing and producing the medication. Members of the Bachman family with LeafLine Labs teamed up with Cottage Grove are just one of the companies to express interest.
