First Medical Marijuana Sales in CT Happening Soon

By Rebecca 11/03/2014

Nearly two years after Connecticut legalized medical Marijuana, the state is finally ready to start selling it to the 2,326 already registered patients beginning as early as the week of September 22, 2014. Daniel Emmans, the chief operating officer at Watertown's Theraplant LLC, believes they're right on track to make a delivery to Connecticut dispensaries at the beginning of the week. Currently, there are six dispensaries licensed in the state, and it's believed that they'll begin selling the cannabis one day after they receive the shipment.

The first cannabis delivery from Theraplant LLC will be in smokeable form, and in the form that can be used in a vaporizer, and it will currently only be available in 5-gram portions, but as soon as manufacturing ramps up, other portions sizes will become available including 10, 15, and 35 grams.

Several conditions qualify a patient in the state of Connecticut for the medical marijuana program. The qualifying conditions include:

  • Cachexia

  • Cancer

  • Crohn's disease

  • Epilepsy

  • Glaucoma

  • HIV or AIDS

  • Intractable spasticity

  • Multiple Sclerosis

  • Parkinson's Disease

  • Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

  • Other medical conditions may be approved by the Department of Consumer Protection

Patients are allowed to possess a one-month supply of the medication, and to register for the program, it will cost patients $100. The other medical marijuana growers in the state include Curaleaf LLC in Simsbury, Connecticut Pharmaceutical Solutions LLC in Portland, and Advanced Grow Labs LLC in West Haven, which all plan to begin shipping their products by the end of 2014.

Theraplant is currently charging $11 per gram to dispensaries, which they believe is a fair price due to the cost of meeting the regulations in the state, which are quite high. Some dispensaries plan to incorporate a per-gram discount on larger orders to help patients to save money on their medication.
